BIOGRAPHY / OVERVIEW
My name is Matt Johnson, and I am the World History and Civics/Economics teacher at Johnston County Early College Academy. That means I primarily work with our school's freshmen and sophomores. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Social Studies Education from Campbell University in 2010. I have been teaching at JCECA since 2012. The way our schedule is set up, I teach the freshmen World History during the Fall semester and the sophomores Civics in the Spring. This year I started my new role at the school as Lead Teacher for 9th and 10th grades. Within this role, I handle academic and behavioral interventions, setting up parent conferences, among other various responsibilities for our freshmen and sophomores.
I'm also one of the faculty advisors for the school's Student Government, which coordinates many school events throughout the year. I am a nerd at heart, so my students know they can talk to me about Star Wars or The Walking Dead or anything dealing with U.S. politics. They'll also be the first to tell you that few people can match my sarcastic wit and dry sense of humor. I love teaching the students of JCECA and the role that I can play in setting them up for the future.
During a visit to my classroom, you have the possibility of seeing any number of activities taking place. My students might be working in groups on projects dealing with real-life scenarios, conducting literacy circles using primary source documents, or having spirited debates on a variety of issues. All of my classes have sites on Google Classroom, a web-based resource for students and teachers. Students are given passwords to access their class page. At this point, our school communicates and distributes resources almost entirely online. Any messages, assignments, forum discussions, documents, and ALL relevant course information can be found on these two websites.
Feel free to follow me on Twitter for classroom updates, tips, or ideas!
